Which tiles are better, soft or metal?

+

It is impossible to give a clear answer to this question, but we have prepared a number of key differences between these roofing materials especially for you:

  • Sizes and weight. The materials differ significantly in weight and size, primarily this affects the complexity of installation. Metal roofing sheets are not small in size: length - 0.5-7.5 m (in most cases up to 4.5 m), width - 1.12-1.19 m. Because of this, difficulties may well arise with lifting them to a height and fixing them to the rafters, especially if the work is carried out by unskilled specialists, simply put, "moonlighters". Moreover, for delivery to the site, you will definitely need freight transport. With soft tiles, such problems should not arise.
  • Application. Soft tiles are more universal in terms of application. This means that due to their flexibility, they allow you to cover the roof of almost any configuration with a minimum amount of waste.
  • Lathing and rafters. The lathing for metal tiles is simpler and therefore cheaper, which cannot be said about the lathing for soft roofing.
  • Difficulty of installation. It can be said for sure that on most simple single- or double-pitched roofs, with sufficient experience, it is simpler to install metal tiles, which certainly affects the final cost of roofing work.
  • Soundproofing. If the plans do not include installing a roof with insulation, but at the same time soundproofing "plays a role", then it is better to opt for soft roofing, due to the fact that metal tiles are a significantly noisier option.
  • Durability. The service life of both materials is approximately the same, with proper installation and selection of high-quality material, it reaches 50 years.
  • Cost. Soft roofing is a more expensive material, requiring additional costs for the installation of the sheathing, which leads to a 20-30% increase in price compared to metal roofing.

As can be seen from the above, each of the materials has its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, for this reason, before making the final choice, it is worth "weighing" each of the factors. For example, low sound insulation of metal tiles may not play a role on the roof of a barn, utility block or other non-residential building. But on a mansard roof, on the contrary, it can become a weighty argument in favor of bituminous shingles.

Why membrane and not film?

+

The answer to this question is quite simple, first of all, it is worth remembering that the roof is the most important element of the building, you should not save on it, especially in this case.

Even a thrifty customer who, contrary to the advice of professionals, gave preference to the film, will regret it in 2-4 years. The fact is that the film must be laid in such a way as to provide a ventilation gap of 3-5 mm between the film and the insulation. The gap is necessary to remove moisture that accumulates in the insulation in winter. At the same time, ventilation and moisture removal will only occur when air movement is ensured in the gap, for this purpose, inlets and outlets are made on all secondary elements (ridge, valley, protrusions) and others.

It is very difficult to properly organize ventilation outlets for normal ventilation of the ventilation duct, especially in the case of a complex roof. In practice, in 85% of cases, even by high-level professionals, ventilation is organized with gross violations of technology, and this is fraught with serious consequences.

When installing a membrane, such problems will not affect the owner. Firstly, in this case, the insulation is laid close to the membrane, and you can forget about gaps, inputs and outputs. Secondly, a high-quality membrane will easily remove the maximum amount of moisture accumulated in the insulation, if we talk about numbers, this is 30% more than when using a film, taking into account the high-quality installation of the latter.

Despite the fact that the cost of the membrane is higher than that of a waterproofing film, in the end, these costs will pay off very quickly. The membrane is a universal under-roof waterproofing. Its use in a roofing structure is justified in 95% of cases - both in terms of functionality and in terms of saving money.

What do they mean when they talk about bitumen roll roofing?

+

Bituminous roofing (not to be confused with bituminous shingles) is one of the most common types of construction. This is a regular flat roof, which can be seen on most apartment buildings. The base of such a roof is a concrete slab. Roll or tile insulation, most often mineral wool, is laid on top of the supporting structure. And finally, the topmost layer is waterproofing, which protects the insulation from precipitation and ultraviolet radiation. In the vast majority of cases, rolled bituminous materials are used as the latter.

What is the distance between the strips for installing Monterrey metal tiles?

+

The distance from the outer surface of the border strip to the middle of the second strip is 300 mm. The distance between the others is 350 mm. For more details, read our installation instructions.

How important is under-roof ventilation?

+

For those who are too lazy to read, we can say right away that under-roof ventilation is very important and if you want to extend the service life of the roof by at least 10 years, then its arrangement is mandatory.

Absolutely any roof structure has high humidity, which occurs for several reasons, the main one being:

  • The difference in temperatures inside and outside, especially in winter. It is known that warm air is lighter, accordingly it rises up, reaching the roof, touching the cold surface of the roofing material, forming condensation.

Wooden roof structures, insulation, roofing, and, as a consequence, the entire roof as a whole suffer from the resulting high humidity in the roofing space. Wetting the insulation reduces its thermal insulation characteristics several times, and wooden structures are subject to rotting, mold and fungi, which significantly reduces the service life of the roof and can negatively affect the health of the residents of the house. It is to prevent such a situation that it is necessary to carry out work related to the arrangement of under-roof ventilation.

Thickness of the insulation layer when insulating the attic?

+

According to the recommendations of manufacturers and roofing specialists, as well as from our company's personal experience, the insulation layer when insulating the attic should be 25-30 cm. It is best to make a double or triple layer, this is the method of insulation that prevents the appearance of cold bridges. When insulating the attic, one must not forget that the gable is the wall of the attic, and wood, as is known, requires a thicker layer of insulation than brick walls.

Is it possible to install soft roofing yourself?

+

Installation of any roofing, regardless of the type of covering, is a complex job that requires professional equipment. For example, when installing a built-up roof, a gas burner or an industrial hair dryer is used. However, the availability of the necessary tools does not guarantee quality. Without special knowledge and professional skills, it is impossible to take into account all the details and carry out the work in compliance with technological requirements. As a result, the roof loses its performance properties in the first year and begins to leak. This is why the installation of roll coverings should be entrusted to professionals who have a license to perform roofing work, act on the basis of a contract and provide a guarantee for the services rendered.

What does local roof repair mean?

+

Local repairs are a set of works to identify defects, eliminate individual damage to the roof covering and/or roofing cake and restore the operational characteristics of the roofing system in individual sections of the roof.
Professional roof maintenance is a reasonable choice that ensures the longest possible operation of the building without unnecessary costs and force majeure situations.

For a thorough inspection of the roof condition, performing work on local and major, current and emergency roof repairs, it is optimal to involve industrial climbers. Professional training and experience of specialists in roofing work, as well as the absence of costs for the rental and installation of special equipment allow us to guarantee adequate prices for all types of repairs.
